School’s reflection
Participating in the Coding Together – Building Digital Capacity Across the Gort Small Schools Cluster project, in partnership with University of Galway, has been an extremely positive and rewarding professional learning experience for our small schools’ cluster. The project strongly supported the implementation of the new Primary Mathematics Curriculum through the development of problem-solving, logical thinking, collaboration, and creative learning experiences using digital technologies.
With the ongoing support and encouragement, from the University of Galway, teachers engaged in hands-on professional learning in Bee-Bots, Micro–bits, coding, and digital technologies. Teachers also participated in AI workshops, which increased awareness and understanding of how emerging technologies can support teaching, learning, creativity, and teacher preparation. These experiences greatly enhanced teachers’ confidence and digital competence and aligned closely with the aims of the Department of Education Digital Strategy for Schools by building digital capacity and promoting innovative teaching and learning practices.
Teachers worked together to share ideas, resources, and practical approaches, creating a supportive professional learning community across our small schools. The impact on pupils has been very positive, with students showing increased engagement, creativity, communication, and enthusiasm for learning through coding and digital activities. The project has created a strong foundation for continued collaboration, innovation, and digital learning across the cluster.
